Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
