British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
