Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress offers an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to presenting a workout series on television. Edged out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and horrifying process called the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in a progressively toxic connection among both women. October 17th, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story features Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a hiatus from reporting on international wars to board a high-end voyage with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, and other extremely wealthy individuals. But after a mysterious woman falls into the sea during the evening and all passengers claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, on Netflix
This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries in this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has rendered the children anxious. After Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, late evening, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks used by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission to identify a double agent inside the organization from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
