Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
